State Politicians, Dallas Cowboys' Jones Fight for NFL Network

By Albert Breer -- The Dallas Morning News, 10/30/2007

State Sen. Kim Brimer (R-Fort Worth) is taking cable companies to task for what he said is their failure to work out differences with NFL Network, and he has a powerful ally in Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Brimer sent out a memo requesting that Time-Warner, Charter and Comcast add NFL Network to their basic cable packages in time for the Cowboys' two games on the channel this season, the first of which is less than a month away. The Cowboys-Packers game on Nov. 29 and the Cowboys-Panthers game on Dec. 22 will both be on NFL Network.

In the Dallas market, the games will be broadcast over the air on KDFI (Ch. 27). But unless something changes, major fan bases in Austin, San Antonio and Oklahoma City could be shut out.

If a resolution is not reached, Brimer and State Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale (R-Houston) are prepared to offer consumer-forced legislation, which would, at the very least, lead to arbitration through the Texas Public Utility Commission. Brimer said the bill probably would also involve the MountainWest Sports Network, which broadcasts TCU games and is largely unavailable on cable.
